Formed in 2014 in Mumbai, the band Masala Coffee has carved a niche for themselves with their folk rock sound. Their music videos, Munbe Vaa and Kantha made them a household name, with each video getting over a million views.Masala Coffee which
Masala Coffee which consists of eight members is set to perform at Global Village this weekend on March 17 at 9pm. We spoke to the band about their Dubai experience and what's next on the cards for them.
1. This is your third performance in Dubai... how have your past experiences in the city been?
We've always had a very positive and warm response from our fans as well as the international crowd. They enjoy our music even though they may not understand the language.
2. What is it about the folk mu-sic that strikes a chord with the audience?
Our strength is our diversity. All of us come from different musical genres but our victory is the way we all blend and put in our little bits which form the unique sound and transforms Masala Coffee to another level of folk rock, which stands out from all the other indie bands.

3. How do you compose music with so many members in the band having an opinion?
One of us brings a tune or idea based on a Raagam or a folk song and then we all work on it. Luckily, as the name suggests it's masala at work after that! The end product you hear is crafted with a lot of patience, love and hard work. We never have arguments regarding music.
4. You have composed for a Tamil and Malayalam film in the past. Do you find it restrictive to work for films?
So far we've been given a free hand according to what guidelines we get regard-ing the script involved and all of them have served the purpose. We have currently produced a song for the film Solo starring Dulquer Sal-man.
5. What about new releases?
The originals that we are planning on may feature instrumentalists. We do a lot of research regarding this, so that music lovers get to hear stuff that they don't normally hear from us. We are working on our album and two new singles - a Malayalam song titled 'Arivaal' and another unnamed Hindi travel song.
