‘It’s great to be Bipasha Basu’

BIPASHA BASU HAS come a long way in the industry. Off-late her projects have revealed a different side to the actress.

In her next release, Priyadarshan’s Aakrosh Bipasha plays a domestic abuse victim, a complete contrast to the actress’s real image.

What did you do to understand the psyche of Geeta, your character, in Aakrosh?

I didn’t do any research but when my director explained the character to me I understood her. I just followed his vision. It was tough playing Geeta because I’ve never played such a weak character in my career. She’s vulnerable and a victim of circumstances. A girl married off to an elderly man because of the caste system. She bears the brutality and constant abuse in the marriage. She is a contrast from the real me. There are so many women who are like Geeta and it’s unfortunate that they’re in such circumstances. While working on this film I realised how great it was to be Bipasha Basu in comparison to Geeta.

What was the most disturbing aspect about Paresh Rawal’s on-screen character?

What disturbed me is, knowing there are many people like his character in the world. They feel powerful by showing their strength on women. They’re frustrated, corrupt, negative human beings who thrive on hurting other people.

How was Priyadarshan on the set of Aakrosh?

As a director he has great sense of clarity. He is clear about what is essential in a scene. But at the same time he gives you the freedom to perform.

Your co-star Akshaye Khanna is said to be difficult person on the sets; do you think he needs an attitude make-over?

You can’t really change who you are. Everyone has their own individual identity with a different personality. He is comfortable being himself so I’m no one to comment.

Did you feel left out with Ajay and Akshaye hogging the limelight?

Ajay and Akshaye drive the story and if they aren’t in the forefront then the film might suffer. They are the ones that drive the film. They are the officers who play an important part in the investigation.
