MAN JAILED FOR PROVIDING MAID WITH ABORTION PILLS

The Dubai Court of First Instance has sentenced Mahmoud A.G., a 31-year-old Bangladeshi to three years in jail followed by deportation for helping a Bangladeshi housemaid have an abortion.

The accused, who is said to have developed relations with 21-year-old Yatehi A. H., helped her with the abortion by providing her pills. She later died due to complications.

According to the case history, the Iranian Hospital reported to the police on May 4, 2004, that a Bangladeshi woman was brought to the hospital in a serious condition. The hospital management told the police that the woman was brought by an unidentified person, who left her alone and ran away.

The woman said she had arrived in the country in November 2003 on a work visa. She was received by the second accused Jasheemul D., also a Bangladeshi, and she lived with him in the neighbourhood of Al Hamriya.

She said he treated her like a wife, with her consent. However, after three months, he passed her on to Mahmoud against a payment of Dh6500.

She lived with the latter for a month, and noticed symptoms of pregnancy. A medical check up revealed that she was in the fourth month of pregnancy.

The accused ordered her to abort the baby, and on his insistence, she agreed and took the pills given by him. After the abortion, the foetus was removed and thrown into the trash basket.

Her health took a turn for the worse after the abortion, prompting Mahmoud to take her to the Iranian hospital where he abandoned her.

Attempts to save her life proved futile and she died on July 12, 2004, but only after she gave the police all the details which helped in indicting the accused.
