LOS ANGELES - Mexican filmmaker Alfonso Pineda “Poncho” Ulloa will write and direct “The Lost Diary of Don Juan,” a revisionist take on the origins of the great lover.
Set in Spain’s Golden Age against the backdrop of the Spanish Inquisition, the adaptation of the Douglas Carlton Abrams novel follows Juan Tenorio from his days as an orphan in a nunnery (where he corrupts one of the sisters) through his teenage years as a thief and spy and finally to his perilous rise through Sevilla society as a notorious libertine.
Ulloa will meet with actors about the iconic role later this week.
“Don Juan is one of the most fascinating and timeless characters in literature because his story goes right into the heart of the tug-of-war relationship between lust and love, the flesh and the spirit, desire and morality,” said Ulloa, whose credits include the 2008 Spanish-language film “Love, Pain and Vice Versa.” (please visit our entertainment blog via www.reuters.com or on http://blogs.reuters.com/fanfare/)
