THE 'CHAIRMAN OF the board', 'master of ceremonies' and more recently 'king of the jungle'; when it comes to describing former Tottenham Hotspur, West Ham and Portsmouth manager, not to mention British reality TV show I'm A Celebrity Get Me Out of Here winner, Harry Redknapp, no epithet is too grand. A permanent fixture on the English soccer landscape from his playing days with the high-flying West Ham sides of the 1960s-'70s, to winning the FA Cup with unfancied Portsmouth as a coach in 2008, to developing Gareth Bale and Luka Modric for Champions League success with Tottenham, Redknapp has done it all and become fan favourite along the way. His constant media presence and the fact he heads a sporting dynasty comprising ex-player son, Jaimie, and current Chelsea manager, nephew Frank Lampard, has enabled the 72-year-old to transcend club allegiances and settle at the top of the tree. Today he is simply lauded a 'good football man', always primed with a hilarious anecdote from his time in the game. There's the one where he plucked a vocally critical fan out of the crowd and asked him to play up front to prove he could do better than the player he was chastising. Or the time, after securing Chilean captain Javier Margas' signature for West Ham, Redknapp discovered the homesick star had jumped out of his hotel room window and hitchhiked to Heathrow to scarper home.
But you don't want to read about the tales here when you can listen to them all live in person in Dubai tomorrow night (Friday, January 31) at An Audience With Harry Redknapp at the Movenpick Hotel, Jumeirah Beach Residence from 7pm. Get up close and personal and be ready to laugh, as Redknapp helms a storytelling master class where the atmosphere and company will be spot on.
"I did a tour last year in England," Redknapp said when we met at the One & Only Royal Mirage this week. "I did about 40 theatres and it was an amazing experience.
"We take questions and we have a good laugh. We tell some football stories and a little bit about I'm A Celebrity. We have a great time."
Tickets are selling out fast, so make sure to snap up the last few today and don't forget to watch our in-depth one-on-one interview here on khaleejtimes.com.
