When it comes to styling there are two types of people: those that can put together an outfit in 3 minutes and have it look red carpet ready, or those who take over 3 hours and still come out a little frazzled looking like Mrs. Weasly.
With the College of Fashion and Design Dubai(CFD)'s two-day short course in the 'Art Of Personal Styling' yesterday and today at CFD in Bay Square, the latter need not worry anymore. Author, business mentor and personal stylist to celebrities and royals, Kelly Lundberg is sharing her success story of building a fashion styling business in Dubai.
She has worked with society and business elite, not only in Dubai, but all over the world. A public speaker, Kelly also created an additional business to help those who want to be stylists create the business of their dreams.
During the course she touches upon topics such as history of fashion styling; wardrobe management; and practical personal styling session and much more.
Here she gives us an insight into why a personal stylist is important.
To what do you attribute your success in the fashion styling business?
You could say my success has been due to hard work and forward thinking. I was one of the first to turn personal styling and image consulting into a business. I have consistently developed and offered image consulting, personal shopping and styling services. This has helped me reach a broader market.
The advent of social media has been a huge accelerator. It has helped me further my reach with my audience and build up my own personal PR.
How has Dubai contributed to your professional ambitions?
Dubai is hugely inspirational to me. At the time I started, if you had a dream and determination you could achieve it, that's why I'm so happy this is where my business is based.
What's the first thing you ask a client when you are signed up to style them?
First I gauge their expectations. It's less now but generally people have a preconceived idea of what a personal stylist should do and I like to be clear about what they are expecting and match it to what I do.
Which celebrity's style do you admire the most and why?
The list is endless, Dubai itself has so many home grown celebrities now who have amazing style.
How would having a personal stylist help a person, personally and professionally?
Apart from the practical sides such as saving time and saving money, the stylist is working for you and broadening your horizon. There is a saying, 'Dress for the job you want, not the job you have' and a personal stylist can help you actualise that vision.
Taking part in a personal styling short course like the ones I am doing with CFD, can help you either with your own personal style or even set you down a path where personal styling can be more than a hobby, even a career.
