VARUN DHAWAN SPENT around three-and-a-half months learning a tailor’s job. He portrays a tailor in his latest movie Sui Dhaaga. He learnt how to make patterns, designs, change the needle on a machine when it broke and even assemble a sewing machine.
“I can make a shirt and I can make a blouse. I could make an Indian dress if I had help,” said Varun while talking about the movie.
“It’s a full character with a moustache and specific clothing,” he said about his role in the movie.
Varun and Anushka Sharma are coming together for the first time in this weekend’s release, Sui Dhaaga –Made in India, where they play Mauji and Mamta, a tailor and an embroiderer who dream of making a name for themselves.
Anushka signed the film as she wanted to sustain the interest of her audiences by doing different stories and characters. “I am happiest when I am out of my comfort zone. I feel like I am happiest when I have (to play) a character who is very different than me. I am a very quiet person. I don’t have a strong personality so I love it when I have something strong to play on screen. I want to reach out to my audiences in the best way possible.
“Sui Dhaaga was challenging as I was playing a character whose instincts were different from mine. To inculcate her faculties inside me, I had to understand her aspirations and the situation, and I gave it my best.”
In the movie, Anushka plays a simple, innocent and sincere woman whose character balances home and work with equal ease. “She comes from a lower middle-class family. She was married off when she was much younger. She is busy with her house work and has never expressed herself very well in the larger scheme of things at home. How she finds her strong mind and unique personality is what happens through the film.
“This film has taught me how it doesn’t matter where you come from but what matters is where you want to go.”
Varun spoke about the challenges of cycling in peak summer during the shoot. “In Chanderi, people were really warm. It was fun riding a cycle around the country. We spent around 10 hours of continuous cycling with no breaks in Chanderi and Delhi. It was during the summer. It was tough and I had to cycle daily for about 15 days.”
He also spoke about the time when he almost fainted while hopping onto a bus which was on the move. He had to shoot the scene around 10 times.
“I vomited when I was running behind a bus in Delhi in the heat. The scene required me to run and catch the bus. Since I can run really fast, the bus driver started driving faster. I kept running and started vomiting. I was dehydrated. Then I rested for a while. I think the director was very happy as he got an authentic shot. It’s there in the film.”
Varun and Anushka explained that Sui Dhaaga is an emotional film about finding love through self-reliance. “The emotion is uplifting,” said Anushka.
Whereas Varun said, “I am playing a tailor for the first time in my career. The comic element is what attracted me towards the film. It is very different from the other films that I have done. It is a feel-good film. I want people to realise how important family is when they watch the film.”
The duo, who are known to take risks with their careers by doing out-of-the-box roles, were all praise for each other.
“Varun is an engaging co-actor. He is extremely driven and very secure in his being, which is a rare thing to have in this industry, though he doesn’t take himself very seriously,” said Anushka.
While Varun likes Anushka’s honesty, “She has a quirky sense of humour and she is brutally honest and that’s what made us get along very well. I think somewhere Anushka wants me to respect myself more.”
