CHEF GARY RHODES OBE has died in Dubai aged 59, according to a statement from his family. On Tuesday evening (November 26), the star of countless British television shows including MasterChef and Strictly Come Dancing passed away in the city he has called home since 2011 with his wife Jennie, whom he met in catering college, by his side.
"The Rhodes family are deeply saddened to announce the passing of beloved husband, father and brother, Gary Rhodes OBE," read the official announcement. "The family would like to thank everyone for their support and ask for privacy during this time."
Born in south London in 1960, Rhodes became instantly recognisable for his distinctive haircut on mid-'90s TV and later for a soft-spoken and masterful approach to his craft. The chef enjoyed continued success throughout his career, earning five Michelin stars and penning 18 recipe books. His tireless cheerleading for British cuisine earned him a spot in the BBC's 2006 Great British Menu competition and eventually led him to the UAE where his eponymous restaurants became renowned for their promotion of UK produce and techniques. The Grosvenor House's Rhodes W1 and Le Royal Meridien Beach Resort and Spa's Rhodes Twenty10, not to mention Vox Cinemas' Theatre by Rhodes outlets, are testament to Rhodes' prowess.
"The team at Grosvenor House Dubai and Le Royal Meridien Beach Resort and Spa are devastated to hear of the tragic passing of Chef Gary Rhodes OBE," said a statement from the hotel group. "Not only has the industry lost a true culinary legend, we have also lost an inspirational human being and a very dear friend. No words can express our sadness at Gary's death or our gratitude for the opportunity to work with him. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Rhodes family."
