So, we are kind of in love with Jameela Jamil. The former British television and radio presenter and now one of the stars of The Good Place has a lot of things to say about issues affecting women around the world. In an explosive interview on Channel 4 News recently, Jameela spoke openly about being an activist against the culture of airbrushing. The interview made us want to learn all we could about this talented and outspoken IT girl.
Jameela was working as an English teacher to foreign students when she got her big break. She landed a presenter gig at T4 from 2009 until 2012. She then hosted The Official Chart and was co-host of The Official Chart Update, alongside Scott Mills on BBC Radio 1 until January 2015. When she decided that being a presenter wasn't really what interested her, she moved to LA to pursue her dream of being a writer but landed the role of Tahani Al-Jamil in the American television series The Good Place alongside Kristen Bell!
You're not going to believe this but before being cast in The Good Place, Jameela had never appeared in a scripted TV show! Although she'd always wanted to be a comedian, this is her first foray into television! "I honestly had no experience," Jameela told iNews. "Although, at the audition they asked me that question and I panicked and lied. I told them I had 'done some theatre in England.' Which was technically true. I had one line in the stage play of Oliver at primary school, I played his dying mother. I was six years old."
When Jameela was a teenager she suffered from anorexia. She blames the media's constant glorification of super thin celebrities for it. But when she was 17 years old, Jameela was struck by a car. She suffered several broken bones and damaged her spine. She thought she would never walk again and was stuck in bed for two years! "I was on steroids to help my recovery, and I gained five-and-a-half stone [77 lbs.]," she wrote in a 2013 column for Company Magazine. "The steroids made me so hungry that I was eating a loaf of bread with every meal. The weight gain completely changed the way I felt about my body and I became very negative - I started trying to cover myself up all the time to draw as little attention to myself as possible."
Since then, Jameela has been very critical about how women are portrayed in the media and isn't afraid to point out what she calls the "double agents" of Hollywood. By that she means those who advertise an idealistic life which isn't beneficial to furthering the interest of women. One of those double agents that she's called out is Kim Kardashian. Earlier this year when Kim K advertised appetite suppressing lollipops on her Instagram, Jameela posted: ''No. F*** off. No. You terrible and toxic influence on young girls." She went on to say "This whole family makes me feel sad. All the money and fame in the world can't make you stop hating your nose, your lips, your arse, your weight, your skin, your age, your SELF. '10 years we have heard of little more than their obsession with looks and how to fix "imperfections.""
