It's a double bonanza for fans of South Indian heart throb Dulquer Salmaan as the actor heads to Dubai on July 29 to promote his debut Bollywood flick Karvaan. DQ (as South Indian superstar Mammootty's son is popularly referred to by fans) was last in town to promote his bi-lingual experimental movie Solo directed by Bejoy Nambiar in 2017.  Dulquer, co-star Mithila Palkar and director Akarsh Khurana are expected to visit VOX cinemas at BurJuman, around 5pm on July 29.
Starring DQ alongside Bollywood stalwart Irrfan Khan and newbie Mithila Palkar (who made her name in YouTube web series Girl in the City and Little Things), Karvaan is a slice of life movie set around a quirky tale of a young man who embarks on a road trip, following news of his father's death.
When City Times caught up with Dulquer over the phone recently he was his usual down-to-earth self. "Coming to Dubai is like home-coming to me," confessed the star who has lived and worked in the UAE before he got into films. "My passport is filled with entry and exit stamps of Dubai. I don't think I can count how many! My first ever stamp is probably a Dubai entry. I have friends and family there. So Dubai feels like home."
The actor stressed he missed the presence of co-star Irrfan Khan, who is on a sabbatical from films while undergoing treatment for an ailment, during the promotional drive of Karvaan so much that it almost seems as if they were promoting a different film from the one they shot together.

For Mithila the trip to Dubai to promote Karvaan is all the more special since she has lived in Dubai till the age of 5. " Fortunately I am travelling with Akarsh Khurana (director) and Dulquer Salmaan, both of them know Dubai quite well and they know all the best go-to places. I am just going to follow their lead because I know for a fact that I really enjoy travelling with Akarsh. He is someone who knows the best places to eat and visit!
"I haven't been to Dubai for more than 22 years and I am pretty certain that it has transformed completely so everything is going to be new to me. It's going to be similar to how you would experience it for the first time," she told City Times.
Karvaan marks Dulquer's debut in Bollywood following 20 odd movies in the South Indian film industry, a move the actor explains as an organic attempt to expand his repertoire and reach a wider audience.

"I'm hoping a lot of people who probably didn't understand the language in which I have worked so far, or read the subtitles, can this time come see a film where they can look directly at my face and not at the bottom of the screen!" he joked.
Judging from the trailer, which shows Dulquer in a serious mode offset by Irrfan's deadpan humour we can't wait to watch the magic the duo, alongside Mithila Palkar, will unleash in cinemas. Karvaan, directed by Akarsh Khurana and produced by Ronnie Screwvala, is set to release in UAE cinemas on August 2.  ambica@khaleejtimes.com
