When most people think of Dubai, they think of the great architecture, the shopping and the record breaking feats. But how many people think about Dubai's wild life? To some that may sound like a bit of an oxymoron but we guarantee you it isn't. Believe it or not, Dubai has a surprisingly diverse and rich wild life. Still sceptical? Well, then, what you need to do is first of all make sure you're free this Tuesday, October 9 at 9pm; secondly switch your TV to the Discovery Channel on OSN and finally watch their new one-off documentary titled Wild Dubai.
Lizards who pretend to be scorpions in the desert, flamingos in the reserves, bats in the caves, mountain goats, Arabian toads and saving turtles in Burj Al Arab! Wild Dubai has definitely gone past our expectations and assumptions of the Dubai we thought we knew.
Produced by UK-based Plimsoll Productions, Wild Dubai does more than highlight the diverse wild life that exists in and around Dubai. You'll get to see the frankly amazing conservation efforts that the government of Dubai have undertaken to protect animals and their environments as well as depicting how well-known traditions from the region, such as falconry and camel racing, have adapted in modern times to be more humane and protective of the animals in question.
"When you tell people that we were going to make a wild life documentary in Dubai, the most common reaction is, do they have wild life?" says director of Wild Dubai David Johnson. "I really wanted to come here and show that yes, there is wild life here and actually once you start scratching the surface and once you start talking to people and looking into it in increasing depth you realise there is a lot of wild life here. Not necessary in numbers but in terms of diversity and in terms of the species. To be able to tell that story and to be able to surprise audiences and indeed surprise some of the people here in Dubai with the amount of wild life that's here in the Emirate, that's a real challenge and a delight and that's what really excited me about the project."
