A first-of-its-kind gate for sterilisation of imported livestock coming through Khalid Port has been installed by the Sharjah Municipality to stymie the spread of Covid-19 and ensure consumers' safety.
Thabit Al Taraifi, director-general of Sharjah Municipality, said that the animal sterilisation gate has been put up in the port to spray disinfection material on the livestock being imported. The move comes in line with municipality's continuous efforts to preserve the health and safety of consumers and take the necessary preventive measures to contain the global pandemic, he added.
The animal sterilisation gate, a part of employees' innovation, has been built using recycled materials and other available resources, Al Taraifi pointed out.
He added that the health department assigned special staff in the port to disinfect the imported animals before they reached the market to safeguard public from the virus and other diseases transmitted to humans through animals.
Al Tarifa stressed that the civic body, keen to take all anti-Covid measures, is carrying out sterilisation and disinfection in all buildings and centres affiliated to it.
The municipality has installed sterilisation gates in its building for sterilising individuals and vehicles. The municipality has launched, through the department of transport, about 12 such sterilisation gates in its buildings and centres.
Sheikha Shaza Al-Mualla, assistant director-general of the public health sector and central laboratories, said that the launch of sterilisation gate at the port reflects the municipality's compliance with the highest health standards. The gate has been installed in the veterinary quarry at Khalid Sea Port, and all livestock that are imported will have to pass through it as a first step to ensure they are free of disease before being sent to outlets, she underlined.
