The Sharjah Municipality has removed 322 pop-up shops and confiscated a large quantity of fake masks and sanitisers as well as cosmetics and personal care products that posed public health hazard.
The crackdown was carried out following 10,300 inspection campaigns to prevent the spread of Covid-19 and ensure public safety.
Adel Omar, director of municipal control and inspection at Sharjah Municipality, said that the civic body has intensified its inspections to monitor all negative activities.
He added the municipality removed a total of 322 pop-up shops, where mobile vendors were found selling fake masks and sanitisers of unknown source and expired cosmetics materials. Some vendors were caught selling duplicate products and expired food at low prices to woo customers in industrial areas, Omar pointed out.
"Most of them were staying in the country illegally, while some were even wanted by the police," he added.
The municipality has deployed 40 teams as part of a campaign targeting illegal shops in different parts of the emirate, especially around labour accommodations and industrial zones.
The civic body will intensify inspection and monitoring campaigns during the summer, as these shops mushroom during this time to take advantage of the vacation period and display their goods at cheap prices.
The official urged residents to report such illegal activities by calling 993.
