Coronavirus: UAE reports 1,717 Covid-19 cases, 1,960 recoveries, 5 deaths

Dubai - The new cases were detected through 237,479 additional tests.

The UAE Ministry of Health and Prevention on Sunday reported 1,717 new cases of the Covid-19 coronavirus, along with 1,960 recoveries and 5 deaths.

The new cases were detected through 237,479 additional tests.

Over 35.3 million tests have been carried out to date as part of the UAE's massive screening campaign. The total number of cases in UAE as on March 21 are 440,355 while total recoveries stand at 422,696. The death toll rises to 1,438.

With each passing day, the UAE is taking measured steps towards a post-pandemic recovery phase. From today, hospitals in Dubai can resume elective and non-urgent surgeries, the Dubai Health Authority said in a circular issued on Saturday. The latest development comes on a day when a four-day low of new infected persons was registered and in the wake of more than seven million doses of Covid-19 vaccine being administered across the country.

The ministry stressed its aim to continue expanding the scope of testing nationwide to facilitate the early detection of infected cases and carry out the necessary treatment. Coinciding with the consistent dip in the number of new cases, last week, the ministry had permitted private hospitals to resume elective surgeries and other wellbeing treatments.

The overall number of global Covid-19 cases has surpassed 122.7 million, while the deaths have surged to more than 2.70 million. The US is the worst-hit country with the world's highest number of cases and deaths at 29,782,302 and 541,909, respectively. Brazil follows in the second place with 11,950,459 cases and 292,752 fatalities.

India reported 43,846 new coronavirus cases on Sunday, the biggest daily jump in four months, as its richest state Maharashtra continued to account for more than half of the infections. The rise in India’s Covid-19 cases peaked at nearly 100,000 a day in September, and had been falling steadily until late last month.

Meanwhile in Pakistan, the Civil Aviation Authority has restricted the entry of travellers from 12 countries as the third wave of the deadly Covid-19 pandemic hit the country. The new rules would be effective from March 23 to April 5.
