MoHAP recently announced that the Chinese Sinopharm Covid-19 vaccine was now available at all medical centres in the UAE.

Those aged 18 years and older can take the jab. The vaccine is especially important for the elderly and those with chronic diseases, the Ministry of Health and Prevention said.

The jab is offered in two doses: The first is given after some medical tests and assessments; and the second is given 21 to 28 days later.

The UAE's National Emergency, Crisis and Disaster Management Authority (NCEMA) had reported that the Chinese Sinopharm vaccine shows 100 per cent protection against moderate and severe Covid-19 infections.

Earlier on Thursday, the UAE welcomed 2021 with 33 fireworks across the country, where revellers followed strict Covid-19 safety precautions, including wearing masks and following social distance norms.

The World Health Organisation on Thursday granted emergency validation to the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine, paving the way for countries worldwide to quickly approve its import and distribution.

The WHO said its emergency use listing opens the way for regulators in different countries to approve the import and distribution of the vaccine.
