Covid-19 in UAE: Fish markets now home-deliver fresh catches

With open markets being closed as a precautionary measure against the spread of Covid-19, fish markets in the country are home-delivering fresh catches to residents.

It's brisk business for fish markets in Ras Al Khaimah as they are receiving up to 100 home delivery orders every day. "The home delivery service was rolled out as a precautionary measure to reduce the risk of coronavirus infection and transmission," said Humaid Al Zaabi, deputy chairman, RAK Fishermen Association.

"All fish markets in the emirate have been closed. Home deliveries will prevent gatherings and ensure public safety. However, an additional Dh15 will be charged for each order."

Customers may also have their orders delivered instantly while waiting at the parking lots of the fish markets, he added.

 "A staff worker will approach the customer waiting in the parking and the latter can order the fish while handing over the amount. The worker then buys the fish from counters, refers it either to the cleaning section or fish grilling outlets in the markets, he added. "Nothing extra will be charged for such orders."

Records show that the markets are home delivering up to 100 fish orders per day, Al Zaabi added. "Fish orders are home delivered in ice to ensure they remain fresh."

Abdullah Saeed, an Emirati, said he is extremely happy with the home delivery service. "I thought I won't be able to get fresh fish after the closure of the markets here, but this service has made it so convenient."
Fujairah delivers, too
The fish market in Fujairah has also started the home-delivery service. Mahmud Al Shara, chairman of the Fishermen Association in Fujairah, said customers can contact the association for deliveries. "No one needs to come in person to the fish market or the association. All orders will be delivered home as fast as possible."

The fish delivered will be fresh, he added. "It will neither imported nor frozen."

Khairi Muhammad, an Egyptian resident, thanked the association for the home delivery initiative. "This will truly help us enjoy eating fresh fish without being exposed to the risk of contracting the coronavirus."

 Ahmad Saleh, an Emirati, said it is the responsibility of everyone to respect and adhere to rules. "This is for the safety of us all," he said, adding that the home delivery service was a step in the right direction.
