With Covid-19 PCR tests now priced at only Dh65 in Abu Dhabi, residents are relieved, especially since the screenings are mandatory for some sectors.

The Department of Health – Abu Dhabi (DoH) announced the price reduction on Wednesday. Till then, the cost of doing a nasal swab test was Dh85 in the Capital.

“The cost of Covid-19 (PCR) test is revised to be Dh65 for a single run, including collection and testing of the sample,” the DoH said.

The rate revision followed directives that required some unvaccinated employees to get screened every 14 days. The rule is implemented in five sectors, including hotels and restaurants, transportation, and health, social and personal activities, such as laundries, beauty salons, and hairdressers.

Ugandan expat Shafiq Kasozi, who works in the transportation sector, said the cheaper test would be a big help. “I have to get a PCR test almost every two weeks. I have to pay from my pocket as my company doesn’t pay for it. Cutting the cost is so important to us.”

Patrick Simon, who works at a travel firm, said it would significantly reduce his expenses, especially since he had to take the test regularly as he deals with government departments.

“I am happy that the cost of the PCR test has been reduced by Dh20. I have to visit the immigration offices every week and presenting a negative Covid-19 test is mandatory to enter the premises,” the Filipino expat said.

Another resident Mohan Raj, who manages a restaurant, added: “We have to pay for all workers to undergo the tests. The reduction in the cost of PCR test will help reduce our monthly expenses.”
