Afridi is Not Impressed
with Pink Balls

DUBAI - The sparsely filled crowd at the Emirates Airlines Twenty20 at the Sevens definitely had a good weekend as they got to watch their superstar Shahid Afridi in action. Though for a brief while, it was worth the watch as Afridi top scored for his team Fly Emirates XI in the first match.

Despite his cameo, Afridi was not very impressed with the pink ball that is being used on experiment basis around the world. The pink balls is also being used in the Twenty20 tournament as part of the continued experiment and this was the first time Afridi got a glimpse of how the ball would perform. “I don’t think it’s a good idea. I don’t feel good with the ball and I think its very hard,” Afridi said.

“It’s the first time I’m playing with that ball and for a coloured kit it does not suit at all,” the Pakistan allrounder said.

The pink ball was used in UAE for the first time by the Marylebone Cricket Club’s (MCC) when its team played a few matches against the local teams here. MCC Chairman Mike Griffith had expressed that he was very pleased with the pink balls. The ball was tried in different backgrounds and situations and Griffith had termed it as an interesting experience.

“Probably for a white kit it might suit, but for a coloured kit I don’t find it comfortable at all,” Afridi said.

Afridi did not rule out the idea completely and said that it might be good for day/night matches. “It might be good in the night especially while wearing white coloured dress. But with other colours it’s not a good idea. Even experimenting with the background with different colours might be of some help in the future,” he said.
