They are in search of openers and middle order is as shaky as ever. They won second and fourth one-dayers against South Africa but faltered in the decider despite getting a wonderful start.

Mohammad Hafeez (59) and Shahzaib Hasan (39) gave them a robust 82-run start but middle order once again caved in against a disciplined bowling.

Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi, while addressing a post-match press conference, said he wanted improvement from his team in key areas.

“We bowled badly in the early part of South Africa innings and they scored freely. But from over 34 to 45 we contained the well.

“They played well in final powerplay and collected almost 65 runs. We lost the game there.

“In reply, we started well but lost wickets at crucial moments and conceded the match.”

The all-rounder added: “It is not easy to chase big totals like this everyday while batting second.

“We did fight in all the matches, but after a critical analysis of the way we played I think we need to improve our fielding, fitness and batting in the middle overs,” he said.

“We have one more series against New Zealand before the World Cup, so we must step up in some areas before the big event and that is very important for us.”

While answering a question about Shahzeb’s performance, Afridi said: “He has been given ample chances but failed to perform but he played well today.

“I hope he will keep performing like this to cement his place in the team.” Afridi’s own performance was not up to the mark as he failed with the bat and ball as well. He could not manage a fifty in he one-day series and conceded a lot of runs.

Pakistan and South Africa now play two Tests — one each in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. The series was moved to the UAE due to security fears. The first Test starts in Dubai on November 12.
