Anwar century in vain

SHARJAH — Shaimon Anwar smashed a blistering century, but his efforts failed to prevent Yogi Group from crashing to a massive 110-run defeat against William Hare Abu Dhabi Gymkhana in a semi-final match of the Al Dhaid Gold Cup, organised by the Sharjah Cricket Council.

Anwar cracked 102 off just 49 balls with eight fours and eight sixes as Yogi Group, chasing a huge victory target 309 runs, were bowled out for 198 in the 27th over, thanks to Tahir Butt who returned with a brilliant haul of five for 29.

The Abu Dhabi team, who were recently crowned champions of the Bukhatir League ‘A’ Division Tournament, maintained their super form, scoring 308 for nine in the allotted 40 overs.

Haroon Iftikhar top-scored with 91 off 65 balls with nine fours and three sixes while Mehroz Khan chipped in with 70 off 62 balls which included 10 fours. Saqib Shah (58 off 49 balls with four fours and two sixes) and Faisal (30 off 21 balls) further consolidated the gains with some fine batting. Shiva took four wickets for 62 runs, but the William Hare batsmen were hardly threatened.

Yogi Group, in reply, kept losing wickets at regular intervals despite some great batting by in-form Anwar. Besides Butt, Zeeshan also picked up two wickets to help his side seal a comfortable win.
