Pakistan’s Shahid Afridi, who last week quit as captain and announced he would retire from test cricket after this match, has a side strain and is replaced by Shoaib Malik.

Australia, seeking an eighth consecutive test victory and 14th straight win over Pakistan, named the same team that played at Lord’s. Pakistan need a win to draw the two-match series.

There was torrential rain overnight but ground staff were able to mop up the excess water to start the match on time at 1030 (0930 GMT).

South African umpire Rudi Koertzen is officiating in his final test match.

Australia: Ricky Ponting (captain), Shane Watson, Simon Katich, Michael Clarke, Mike Hussey, Marcus North, Tim Paine, Steven Smith, Mitchell Johnson, Ben Hilfenhaus, Doug Bollinger.
