Cook, leading England for the first time in a test match, was 55 not out at the interval alongside Jonathan Trott (13 not out).

Opener Michael Carberry began his test career in an aggressive manner hitting six fours, including three in one over of paceman Rubel Hossain, but suffered when Bangladesh introduced their spinners.

The left hander was dropped by wicketkeeper Mushfiqur Rahim for 30 off Mahmudullah but the bowler recovered from the setback to trap the Hampshire opener leg before in his next over for the same score.

Cook, quiet initially, struck Bangladesh skipper Shakib Al Hasan for a six over the midwicket and grew in confidence, hitting six more boundaries.
