“Tillakaratne Dilshan is an outstanding all-round player,” Cricket New South Wales chief executive David Gilbert said Monday. “As well as being one of the world’s most destructive batsmen in Twenty20 cricket, he brings a wealth of international experience to our team.
“We look forward to him playing a leading role in helping New South Wales win next season’s Big Bash and thereby qualifying for the Champions League.”
Dilshan, 33, was player of the tournament at last year’s Twenty20 World Cup in England, scoring 317 runs at an average of 52.83. He briefly joined Northern Districts province this summer for New Zealand’s domestic Twenty20 tournament.
His signing for New South Wales requires the approval of the Sri Lankan board.
Australia’s six provincial first-class teams are allowed to recruit two foreign players for the domestic Twenty20 competition. The top two teams in the tournament qualify for the lucrative Champions League international tournament featuring the leading provincial teams from around the world.
New South Wales won the first edition of the Champions League but did not qualify for the second tournament.
