The two-time champions posted a mammoth 459 for nine declared before skittling out MCC for a paltry 162 to take a lead of 297. They extended that lead to 304 after they finished the day at seven for the loss of two wickets in their second dig.

It was the first game to be played day and night, with white clothing and the pink ball. Traditionally, the season-opener to the County season is played at Lord’s but was shifted to the Shaikh Zayed International Cricket Stadium. The experiments are aimed at having day-night Test cricket in the near future. Scottish opener Kyle Coetzer, who resumed on 123, went on to crack 172 from 371 balls with 20 boundaries and a six. Ben Stokes scored a half-century on debut, scoring 51 from 82 balls with five boundaries and a six.

Phil Mustard remained unbeaten on 23. Dawid Malan finished with four wickets for 20 runs in his six overs, while James Middlebrook took three for 118 from his 35 overs.

In reply, MCC lost wickets at regular intervals and were bundled out for 162 with Scott Borthwick, Callum Thorp and Steve Harmison doing the damage. Borthwick claimed four wickets, while Throp took three. Harmison picked up two wickets. Opener Dawid Malan top scored for MCC with 41 from 101 balls with seven boundaries.

Durham were seven for the loss of two wickets at stumps with both wickets falling on nought.
