England win first ODI against Pakistan by 24 runs

England beat Pakistan by 24 runs in the first one-day international at the Riverside on Friday to take a 1-0 lead in the five-match series.

England, after being put into bat, scored 274-6 against Pakistan.

Steve Davies top-scored for England with 87, while Pakistan’s Saeed Ajmal took four wickets for 58 runs in nine overs.

Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi won the toss and elected to bowl against England.

Afridi’s team included 7ft tall left-arm pace bowler Mohammad Irfan for his debut and young batsman Asad Shafiq, but there was no place for fast bowler Wahab Riaz, who will be interviewed by police next week in the course of their spot-fixing inquiries.

England wicketkeeper Steve Davies made just his second ODI appearance in place of Craig Kieswetter, while Ravi Bopara came in for Luke Wright in a team featuring two spinners.

The 50-over match was reduced to 41-overs-a-side as a result of a wet out-field which delayed the start of play by over two hours.

Pakistan’s tour of Britain has been overshadowed by newspaper allegations of a betting scam that saw no-balls deliberately bowled in the fourth Test against England at Lord’s last month.

The claims, published in the News of the World, led to the suspension of Pakistan Test captain Salman Butt and bowlers Mohammad Aamer and Mohammad Asif by the International Cricket Council.
