DUBAI - The Farid Malik Memorial Cup cricket tournament will be held on July 1 to mark the first death anniversary of senior UAE umpire Farid Malik, who died from a heart attack on July 1, 2010.

Freddy Sidhwa, captain of Seven Seas Strikers and one of the senior most cricketers in the UAE, had taken the lead to stage this tournament in Dubai and this is the second edition of the Memorial Cup.

‘‘This tournament will be staged to honour the contribution of Malik to promote the game in the region. He served the game for nearly three decades and his dedicated service needs to be appreciated,’’ remarked Sidhwa

Friends and well-wishers of Malik like umpire Tariq Butt, IP Khaitan of Interface, Mazhar Khan and Mohammad Raza Abbas of UAE Cricket Board, Mohammad Lokhandwala, Farrukh Siddiqui of Dubai Cricket Council, Mansoor Pasha of Sharjah Cricket Council and Shiva Pagrani of Yogi Group, Ansar Butt, Sajid Butt and many others from the cricket fraternity have acknowledged his sincere and honest efforts to promote the game in the region.

‘‘The tournament will be held regularly and no participation fee will be collected from the teams and refreshments and prizes will be provided,’’ added Tariq Butt, senior UAE umpire.
