India 288 all out against England

India were dismissed for 288 in reply to England’s first innings 221, a lead of 67 runs, on the second day of the second Test at Trent Bridge here on Saturday.

Stuart Broad took a hat-trick on his way to Test-best figures of six for 46 on his Nottinghamshire home ground while India’s Rahul Dravid top-scored with 117 — his second century in successive Tests.

England lead the four-match series 1-0.

VVS Laxman hit 54, from 112 balls with 10 fours, before he was caught behind off Tim Bresnan (1-31), who took the only wicket to fall in the morning session.

Rahul Dravid was not out on 44, while Sachin Tendulkar was unbeaten on 14.

India resumed on 24-1 and the first ball of the day, from Stuart Broad nearly removed Dravid.

However, India responded with four boundaries from as many balls and looked comfortable until Laxman played and missed at a ball from Anderson in the 23rd over.

Convinced Laxman had hit the ball, England captain Andrew Strauss immediately used his second review.

Although the microphones picked up a sound, replays were inconclusive and the hotspot technology showed no contact, meaning Asad Rauf’s original decision was upheld.

England’s bowling attack performed reasonably well, but the ball was swinging less than it had on Friday and the experience of Dravid and Laxman steered India through a difficult first hour.

Laxman reached 50, from 104 balls, with a stylish cover drive and appeared settled until he was caught behind off Bresnan, ending a partnership of 93.

Sachin Tendulkar got off the mark with a seemingly effortless four from Jonathan Trott throught the covers and was well set when lunch was called.
