Australia had resumed on 202-7 but lost their final three wickets for the addition of 21 runs to set India a modest victory target of 207 with more than two sessions remaining.
The hosts suffered an early setback when opener Virender Sehwag was caught behind off the bowling of Ben Hilfenhaus for seven, but Murali Vijay (29) and debutant Cheteshwar Pujara (29) batted confidently to see India through to the break.
Earlier, spearhead Zaheer Khan claimed two of the last three Australian wickets to fall while pace colleague Shanthakumaran Sreesanth claimed the other to hasten the end of the tourists' second innings.
