Krejza gets 8 wickets on debut

NAGPUR, India - Australian offspinner Jason Krejza became just the seventh bowler to capture an eight-wicket haul in his first test innings Friday as India was dismissed for 441 in its first innings on the second day of the fourth cricket test.

Krejza returned 8-215 from 43.5 overs as he engineered a quick end to the home side's innings 58 minutes into the second session after India had dominated the pre-lunch overs.

Sourav Ganguly, who will retire at the end of the game after 113 tests, fell 15 short of a farewell century when he became Krejza's fifth scalp.

Krejza struck twice in three balls after the interval when he bowled skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who tried to paddle to fine-leg, and had Ganguly caught at first slip by Michael Clarke.

The double-strike reduced India to 423-7 before Krejza bowled Zaheer Khan (1) and Amit Mishra (0) to be on a hat-trick.

No. 11 Ishant Sharma defended his first delivery to end the sequence, but was the last-man out when bat-pad Simon Katich accepted a sharp one-handed chance to his right.

Krejza took the prized wickets of Rahul Dravid, Virender Sehwag and V.V.S Laxman on the opening day and was the only Australian bowler who created regular chances.

He was the 14th Australian to capture at least five wickets in an innings in his first test match, but his figures were the most expensive of any rookie bowler in an innings, beating West Indian Omari Banks' 3-204 in 2003 against Australia.

Ganguly's dismissal prevented him - unless India bats again - from becoming the fifth batsman in test history to score a hundred in his fast and last tests.

The left-hander started the second morning of the fourth test on 27 and carefully extended India's advantage by posting his 35th half-century.

He combined for an important 119-run partnership with Dhoni that was ended after lunch.

Ganguly, whose 50 came with a drive for two to mid-off from Krejza, had already charged at Krejza and hit him over long-on for six. He also struck eight fours during his 153-delivery knock of 85.

Dhoni offered valuable help with 56 and his half-century came from 88 balls shortly before his departure.

India, which resumed Friday at 311-5, leads the series 1-0 and needs only to avoid defeat to lift the Border-Gavaskar trophy at the end of the match.

Australia's fast bowlers struggled again for penetration on a flat pitch at the new Vidarbha Cricket Association stadium, with only Mitchell Johnson (1-84) and Shane Watson (1-42) taking a wicket.

Sachin Tendulkar's 109 - his 40th test century - set up India's innings on the first day after Dhoni won the toss and elected to bat.
