In the Universities Elite Cup match at the Shaikh Zayed Stadium, UOWD, opting to bat first, rallied to score a mammoth total of 229 for six wickets in 30 overs. The UOWD innings hinged around their skipper Manish Dhakan, who hit an entertaining knock of 72 runs off only 47 balls. Manish, who was severe on all the Pilani bowlers, hit 10 boundaries and a six during his fiery knock.
Keeping him company was Mudasir Mushtaq, who took 78 balls to score 75 runs made with the help of six fours and a six. Pilani’s Saumya was the lone bowler to shine with four wickets for 25 runs.
BITS Pilani, in reply, could manage to score only 132 for nine wickets. Pilani were reduced to 44 for five wickets inside the first 15 overs and never looked threatening despite Azhar’s brisk 23 off 25 balls.
Yash Makar (3 for 17) and Mudasir (2 for 37) were the prime wicket-takers for UOWD.
In the Universities Challenger Cup match at Zabeel Park, LACC, batting first scored 172 runs for eight wickets in 20 overs. Opening batsman, Adnan Hamid top scored with 61 runs off 54 balls, containing four boundaries and two sixes. Imran Khan also added 23 runs off 14 balls later in the LACC innings.
In reply, Cambridge were restricted to 151 for seven wickets despite Irfan Afridi’s 51 runs off 33 and Shafqat Ahmed’s unbeaten 35 off 33.
In other matches, Middlesex University and International Institute of Technology and Management (IITM) registered contrasting wins.
Middlesex University defeated MAHE Manipal by eight wickets while Nalin Khaitan’s knock of 30 runs and three-wicket haul helped IITM beat Canadian University in Dubai by 10 runs in a low-scoring match reduced to 18 overs due to bad weather.
