Leading Urdu language daily Jang reported Saturday that Yousuf will make a formal announcement on Monday at a news conference in the southern port city of Karachi.
“I have decided to quit cricket,” Yousuf was quoted as saying.
The Pakistan Cricket Board has suspended Yousuf and Younis Khan for an indefinite period because of infighting which impacted on the national team’s performance during the series against Australia.
The 35-year-old Yousuf told Jang that it is not a rash decision and he consulted friends and family members before making his decision.
Yousuf was elevated to the captaincy after Younis quit as skipper last year. Under his guidance, Pakistan drew test series against New Zealand before being routed 3-0 by Australia in a test series and 5-0 in a limited-overs series.
The prolific middle-order batsman was reportedly upset after PCB implemented recommendations of an inquiry committee and suspended him.
The PCB also banned and fined former captain Shoaib Malik and allrounder Rana Naved for one year and imposed heavy fines on Shahid Afridi, Kamran Akmal and Umar Akmal for ill discipline during the tour to Australia.
Until he converted to Islam in 2005, he played as Yousuf Youhana and was among a tiny group of Christians who had played international cricket for Pakistan.
In 2006, Yousuf scored nine test centuries in a calendar year and broke Viv Richards’ world record of most test runs in a year by making 1,788 runs in 11 tests. He scored 7,431 runs in 88 test matches at an impressive average of 53.07 with 24 centuries.
