Mumbai Indians inflict shock defeat on Chennai Super Kings

But it took great effort from MI and their sprightly bunch to bring the Kings to heel. MI used a combination of tight bowling and athletic fielding to rein in their opponents. The Chennai Super Kings innings never really took off and despite Matthew Hayden’s muscled 44 off 35 balls, the remaining batsmen could not forge reasonable partnerships to pose any real threat. CSK captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni scored 36 off 26 balls, but even he could not muster the big strokes that could have helped their cause.

Super Kings find the going tough against Mumbai Indians

Matthew Hayden perished to Zaheer Khan’s brilliant diving catch as Sanath Jayasuriya, Harbhajan Singh and Dwayne bravo tightened the screws on what is probably the strongest batting line-up in the Indian Premier League. Jacob Oram then arrived on to the crease as Mahendra Singh Dhoni struggled to get off the blocks. Oram too fell in CSK’s search for quick runs. Now with an asking rate of almost 11 runs an over, the Chennai Super Kings will need some inspired hitting from Dhoni if they need to rescue the match.

CSK-MI match expected to provide thrills

Chennai Super Kings lost Andrew Flintoff in the 10^th over of the match after he was caught and bowled by Harbhajan Singh after he had made a quickfire 24 off 23 balls. Matthew Hayden on the other hand continued in his imperious vein as he swatted three consecutive fours off the bowling of Rohan Raje. With Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Jacob Oram still in the ranks CSK does not lack the firepower but with 96 needed off 60 balls, this match is expected to have a nailbiting finish.

Chennai Super Kings lose quick wickets

Chennai Super Kings lost two wickets as they chased 167 runs to win in their inaugural encounter against the Mumbai Indians. Parthiv Patel fell without scoring to Lasith Malinga after he edged one straight into the hands of Sachin Tendulkar at second slip. Suresh Raina departed soon after he miscued a pull off Dwayne Bravo and was caught near the boundary ropes by R Raje. Matthew Hayden muscled a few boundaries after a watchful start and Andrew Flintoff used his brute strength to garner after a subdued star.

Chennai Super Kings need 167 to win

Chennai Super Kings were set a target of 167 to win by Mumbai Indians in the inaugural match of the Indian Premier League being staged in Cape Town, South Africa.

Even as Sachin Tendulkar scored his second IPL 50, it was some good, clean hitting by Abhishek Nayar that propelled MI to a respectable 166. The highlight of Nayar innings were the three sixes he hits of the 18^th over bowled by Flintoff. He departed after he lobbed an easy one to a fielder off the bowling of Jacob Oram. Oram was the most impressive of the CSK bowlers as he consistently mixed his line, length and pace to make shot making difficult for the MI players.

Mumbai Indians are 105-4 after 15 overs

Mumbai Indians had cantered to 105 for the loss of four wickets after 15 overs in their match against the Chennai Super Kings. Sachin Tendulkar with 35 was at the crease after Dwayne Bravo pulled a shot straight into the hands of Matthew Hayden off Joginder Sharma. Earlier JP Duminy flattered to deceive after he was out to a sharp reaction catch by Manpreet Gony.

Mumbai Indians crawl along after Jayasuriya loss

Mumbai Indians were 64 for the loss of one wicket at the end of 10 overs in their match against the Chennai Super Kings. Sachin Tendulkar and Shikhar Dhawan who had walked in after the loss of Jayasuriya’s wicket, found strokes hard to come by against some disciplined bowling by Jacob Oram and Joginder Sharma. It was a late 10^th over surge that saw the Mumbai Indians cross the 60 run mark. And if the battling was rather sedate for a 20-20 match, a pet dog that ran into the field and interrupted play was the source of much excitement for the crowd and the players. It took several ground attendants to cajole the four-legged spectator off the field.

Jayasuriya motors along, Tendulkar survives

Mumbai Indians were 35 for no loss at the end of the first five overs in their match against the Chennai Super Kings. Sanath Jayasuriya did the bulk of the scoring as Sachin Tendulkar struggled to find his feet against Andrew Flintoff who was introduced into the attack after both Manpreet Gony and Thilan Thushara had bowled two overs each. Matthew Hayden gave Tendulkar his first lifeline when he dropped a simple chance in the slips.

Mumbai Indians bat first against Chennai Super Kings

Sachin Tendulkar and Sanath Jayasuriya opened the batting for the Mumbai Indians as they took on Chennai Super League in the opening match of the second edition of the Indian Premier League being held in South Africa. The first over was bowled by Manpreet Gony and both the opening batsmen adopted a cautious approach as only three runs came off it.
