The pair batted nearly two full sessions to take New Zealand to 331 for 5.

Ryder reached his third hundred – all have come against India – and got to 1000 Test runs in his 12th match with a four off Shantakumaran Sreesanth in the last over of the day but was trapped lbw two balls later on a day that belonged totally to the visitors.

Ryder, the third-quickest Kiwi to get to 1000 Test runs, and Williamson (87 not out) put on 194 runs for the fifth wicket after coming together shortly before lunch when off-spinner Pragyan Ojha had Brendon McCullum stumped for 65. McCullum had earlier put on 104 for the third wicket with Ross Taylor, who made 56 before being caught by VVS Laxman off Harbhajan Singh. New Zealand were 69 for 2 at the start of the day and now trail India by 156 runs.
