The Pakistanis, set 148 to win after dismissing England for 222 in their second innings, were on the verge of victory when three wickets tumbled for eight runs.

Despite some excellent off-spin bowling from Graeme Swann, however, England were unable to stave off defeat for long, giving Pakistan their second test match win of the season after they drew 1-1 with Australia.

Captain Salman Butt top-scored with 48.

England lead the four-match series 2-1 with the final test due to start at Lord’s next Thursday.

Scores: England 233 (M. Prior 84 not out; Wahab Riaz 5-63) & 222 (A. Cook 110) v Pakistan 308 (Mohammad Yousuf 56, Azhar Ali 92) & 148-6.
