The second day’s play was washed out on Monday without a ball being bowled, while 22 overs were lost on the first day due to heavy rain in the southern coastal town of Galle.

The groundstaff were able to dry the outfield at the Galle International Stadium and make it fit to play as skies cleared briefly on Tuesday.

Sri Lanka resumed at Sunday’s total of 256-2 with Tharanga Paranavitana on 110 and Mahela Jayawardene on eight.

Rain had been forecast on all five days of the match, which marks the final Test appearance for Sri Lanka’s world bowling record holder Muttiah Muralitharan.

The off-spinner needs eight scalps to reach the unprecedented 800-wicket mark, to build on his record haul of 515 one-day wickets.
