An early lunch was to be taken at 12:30 p.m. (1130 GMT) but the prospect of any play in Southampton is bleak, with gloomy forecasts predicting heavy rain for the rest of the day. Full covers remained in place on the pitch and across parts of the outfield.

Four bursts of showers interrupted the first day’s play, when only 38 overs were possible. Sri Lanka, which needs a victory to square the series at 1-1, was reduced to 81-4 by stumps after England pacemen James Anderson and Chris Tremlett took two wickets each.

Thilan Samaraweera (24) and Prasanna Jayawardene (10) were the not-out batsmen.
