Ramadan Cup attracts 16 teams

The Interface Transworld Sharjah Ramadan Cup tournament 2010, which will be held under the auspices of the Sharjah Cricket Council, is one such tournament expected to quench the thirst of all those fans.

The tournament will be held from August 9 to September 8. A total of 16 teams will be participating in the tournament. The teams are ECB Blues, Eurocon Alubond, Fly Emirates, Ibsons Group, Interface Transworld, Rufi Real Estate, Seven Seas Strikers, Yogi Group, Farooq CC, Gyan Steel, Lanka Lions, NMC, Nucaf Tellicherry, United Arab Bank, Veteran Cricket Association, Hyderabad, William Hare Abu Dhabi Gymkhana.

The tournament will be held on a league-cum-knock-out basis. The teams are divided into four groups and each team will play against the other teams in their respective group.

The top two teams will qualify for the knockout stage.

“The Sharjah Cricket Council has been successfully holding the tournament since the past so many years attracting big names.

This time also we have a team from Hyderabad, India. PR Mansingh, who was the manager of the India’s World Cup winning team in 1983, will be part of that,” said Mazar Khan, Administrator of Sharjah Cricket Council.

“The matches will be played everyday at 9pm at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium and will be played for 25-over each. “We made it 25 overs considering that there would be a change for the players after playing so many Twenty20 tournaments throughout the year.

This would also give them some extra time to plan their game instead of the fast paced twenty20 game,” he added.

The quarter-finals will be played from September 2 to 5 followed by the semifinals on September 6 and 7. The final will be played on September 8.

Nalin Khaitan, Director of Interface Transworld, expressing his delight to be part of the tournament, said: “We are happy to be the title sponsors of the tournament and even participating in it. This tournament which has grown in the years has played a crucial role in grooming young talents. We have two boys from Delhi (India) who aspire to play for India participating in our team this year.”

Waleed Bukhatir, chairman of the Al Dhaid Cricket Village and a top official at the Sharjah Cricket Council said: “I’m proud to see the tournament continuously dominating in the UAE specifically and GCC in general. We are happy to organise this tournament and to see teams from GCC and India come and participate. I would like to thank the sponsors who have supported us throughout.”

Commending on the excellent work done by the Sharjah Cricket Council, he said “The tournament has been grown because of the tireless work done by SCC. I thank all the people involved in making this tournament a huge success.”

The winner of the tournament will get a cash prize of 10,000 dirhams while the runners-up will get 7,000 dirhams.

The best player of the tournament, best batsman and best bowler will get 1,000 dirhams each.
