Former captain Mahela Jayawardene was unbeaten on 71, having shared a third-wicket stand of 184 with Sangakkara on a lifeless wicket that is proving to be a bowlers’ graveyard.
The Indians have reason to fear the duo at the crease, who compiled Test cricket’s highest partnership of 624 runs at the same venue against South Africa four years ago.
Sri Lanka lead 1-0 in the three-match series, having thrashed the top-ranked Indians by 10 wickets in Galle last week.
Sangakkara moved to 199 with four boundaries in one over from left-arm spinner Pragyan Ojha, and then reached 200 with an edged four to third-man off Harbhajan Singh.
The left-hander has so far hit 29 boundaries during his seven-hour stint at the crease.
Sangakkara’s seventh double-century put him on par with Wally Hammond of England. Only Australian legend Don Bradman (12) and West Indian Brian Lara (nine) have more scores of 200 or more.
Starting the day at 312-2, Sangakkara and Jayawardene added 65 runs from 14 overs in the first hour, easily negotiating the second new ball that was claimed late on Monday evening.
By the time lunch was called, Sri Lanka had hammered 145 runs in 29 overs in the morning session.
India’s bowlers failed to trouble the batsmen, with spin spearhead Harbhajan going for 89 runs from 31 wicketless overs. Ojha had 1-119 and seamer Ishant Sharma took 1-87.
Sri Lanka are looking to bat just once in the match to give their new-look attack a big total to put pressure on the Indian batsmen.
The hosts had surprisingly changed their entire frontline bowling attack that won them the first Test.
With Muttiah Muralitharan now retired and fast bowler Lasith Malinga injured, the hosts replaced them with spinner Ajantha Mendis and Dilhara Fernando.
Also dropped were left-arm spinner Rangana Herath and seamer Chanaka Welegedara. Their places went to debutant off-spinner Suraj Randiv and fast bowler Dammika Prasad.
