Swann returns as England lose Trott

NOTTINGHAM, England - England off-spinner Graeme Swann was back in action on the second day of the second Test against India after spending most of Saturday’s morning session off the field with a hand injury.

But, shortly before his return to the attack, England saw Jonathan Trott leave the field after falling awkwardly on his shoulder when diving in an attempt to stop a run at mid-off.

Trott, visibly in pain, needed several minutes’ of on-field treatment before walking off, unassisted, into the pavilion.

Swann on his Nottinghamshire home ground, had made a valuable 28 on Friday when he was out after being struck on the left hand by a rising ball from Praveen Kumar that he could only glove to Abhinav Mukund at third slip.

Having helped county colleague Stuart Broad add 73 for the ninth wicket at better than a run-ball, Swann exited with England grateful the injury had not been to his right, bowling, hand.

He returned to the field some 30 minutes before lunch on Saturday.

But it was not until midway through the second session that Swann, England’s lone specialist spinner, came on to bowl with India 168 for four off 56 overs in reply to the hosts’ first innings 221 — a deficit of 53 runs.

England are 1-0 up after a 196-run victory in the first Test at Lord’s and if they win this four-match series by a margin of 2-0 or better they will replace India at the top of the ICC’s Test Championship table.
