The prolific batsman hit 62 not out and shared an unbeaten fourth-wicket stand of 86 with Vangipurappu Laxman (34), playing in his 100th test, to help India recover to 202 for three at tea.

Opener Virender Sehwag hit a breezy 66 and put on 98 for the opening wicket with debutant Murali Vijay (33) to get India off to a blazing start after winning the toss and opting to bat.

Australia's debutant off-spinner Jason Krejza picked up two quick wickets to peg back the hosts who were struggling at 122 for three at lunch on a spin-friendly pitch.

The 25-year-old Krejza dismissed struggling Rahul Dravid (0) and Sehwag after medium-pacer Shane Watson sent back Vijay to put the brakes on the home side.

Introduced early into the attack, Krejza had Dravid caught at forward short leg with an off-break that spun sharply.

Four overs later, he bowled Sehwag off an inside edge as the batsman shaped to cut.

Loopy Spinner

However, Tendulkar, who scored 68 and 47 in the drawn third test, and Laxman, who hit a double hundred in the previous game, wore down Australia with controlled batting before taking control.

The two targeted Krejza and used their feet nicely against the tall, loopy spinner to take 40 runs off him in the afternoon session.

Krejza was picked in place of seamer Stuart Clark as a second specialist spinner alongside Cameron White, as Australia look to avoid their first series defeat since the 2005 Ashes in England.

Sehwag, who scored 90 in the second test at Mohali which India won to move ahead in the fourth-match series, attacked from the start as India raced to 50 in the 10th over.

Vijay, replacing the suspended Gautam Gambhir, batted with poise before Watson had him caught by wicketkeeper Brad Haddin with a rising ball.

Sehwag lashed nine fours and a six and was particularly severe on Krejza, hitting him for a four and a six off consecutive balls in his opening over.

Fit-again Harbhajan Singh returned to the Indian side in place of former captain Anil Kumble, who abruptly retired after the last test.
