Victory gave us a big boost, says Waqar

DUBAI - Just when it seemed that Pakistan were staring at one more defeat against South Africa at the Shaikh Zayed Stadium on Sunday night, Abdul Razzaq chipped in with one of the most decisive innings in his career and powered the team to a sterling victory.

His coach Waqar Younis is quite pleased with the all-rounder’s knock that helped Pakistan level the five-match one-day international series 1-1. With the remaining three matches scheduled to be played in Dubai, the coach is certain that the victory will act as a morale booster for his team’s chances.

“Abdul Razzaq was just outstanding yesterday. He is a great performer for Pakistan. We played really good cricket. The victory gave us a big boost. We needed this sort of victory pretty badly,” a relieved Waqar told reporters at the Grand Hyatt Hotel on Monday.

“We want to continue playing positive cricket. The team composition will be decided after today’s training session.”

Despite the victory in the second one-dayer, Waqar is sure about a South African fightback.

“South Africa is a very fine side. They will bounce back. The defeat yesterday would have hurt them.”

Waqar is also quite happy with his bowlers’ performances.

“Our bowlers bowled really well throughout the series. We have to give them credit as they were up against a good South Africans batting side on a fine wicket. They batted superbly and Ingram’s innings was superb. I think we did have quite a few lapses. We did have problems in bowling but if you take it as a package, our bowlers did a super job.”

He reserved special praise for young fast bowler Wahab Riaz, who took the crucial wicket of Colin Ingram on Sunday

“He is very young and enthusiastic. He wants to do well at this level. Riaz played the Test at Oval and his bowling was extraordinary. He is the kind of bowler who would improve with every game. He is a great athlete and likes to train hard. Probably you will see him a lot better in a Test match because he likes bowling long spells. He is pretty sharp and a very smart kid.

Waqar is also pleased with the performance of Younis Khan, who made an impressive comeback and scored 72 runs from two matches in the series.

“Before the start of the series only, I told the media that Younis is a sort of player who would adjust with any side. He is a hardworking batsman and a team man. It doesn’t take much time for him to adjust with any team. He performed—which was the key for Pakistan team. He played really well yesterday also. Though he didn’t get much, he looked very good,” Waqar added.
