“If the board offers me the job, I will definitely look into it,” Waqar told Khaleej Times on Friday.
However, Waqar, who is here as a TV commentator, is firm that he is not interested in a short term job. Waqar was appointed as bowling and fielding coach of Pakistan in their recent tour to Australia,.
“I am not interested if the job is for a shorter term. I think this team have a lot of potential. If some one could guide them properly, I am sure the team could achieve good results. I can do it. If they ask, I’ll probably look into it.”
According to media reports from Pakistan, PCB is set to replace the current coach Intikhab Alam following the team’s disastrous performance
Down Under.
The inquiry committee, which looks into the Australian tour result, is expected to submit the report after the conclusion of the Twenty20 series in Dubai. Former player Ijaz Ahmed, who was the coach of the Under-19 World Cup team, is with the team here as a batting and fielding trainer. His name is also being considered by the PCB following a good performance of the U-19 squad. Waqar is also of the view that a captain should be appointed for a longer term to get good results. However, he refused to name the player he would consider as a good captain for the
current team.
“I can’t really say who could be a good captain for this team. You have to really look into it and see that who would be good in the longer term. I believe you have to appoint the captain for a longer term to get the desired results.
“There is no point in appointing a captain for a particular series or tour. It doesn’t really help the team and the particular captain.”
Waqar was the bowling coach of Pakistan from March 2006 to January 2007.
Asked about the team’s poor performance in Australia, he said: “We played badly. I think the second Test result didn’t really help us. Our morale was down. It was difficult to come back after such a defeat.”
Pakistan lost the second Test in Sydney by 36 runs, despite bowling out Australia for 127 in the first innings.
