Zimbabwe continued with the winning formula used against India in Bulawayo a week ago when they bowled first in the morning and later batted, scoring 289-4 with all six batsmen getting runs.
The team then collapsed to Sri Lanka four days later, scoring only 118 all out with the loss of all ten wickets in some 21 overs.
Zimbabwe made one change from the side defeated by Sri Lanka on Thursday, dropping Chris Mpofu - seen to be their best bowler of the series so far - in favour of Tatenda Taibu in a bid to strengthen the batting.
David Houghton, contracted from England to assist the Zimbabwe coaching, explained to AFP: “We are concentrating entirely on spin. That is the trend these days and it’s us who started it in the West Indies during the world Twenty/20. That is the way to go on ODI cricket.
“It is just unfortunate for Mpofu. Zimbabwe has always had a problem finding really good fast bowlers. He will get more chances.”
India opted for the same XI that thrashed Sri Lanka by seven wickets, a result that put all three on level terms, over run rates excepted, giving the Murali Vijay-Dinesh Karthik opening combination another go.
The teams:
Zimbabwe - Elton Chigumbura (capt), Hamilton Masakadza, Brendan Taylor, Gregory Lamb, Craig Ervine, Charles Coventry, Tatenda Taibu, Andy Blignaut, Graeme Cremer, Prosper Utseya, Ray Price.
India - Suresh Raina (capt), Virat Kohli, Murali Vijay, Dinesk Karthik, Rohit Sharma, Yusuf Pathan, Ravindra Jadeja, Umesh Yadav, Pragyan Ojha, Amit Mishra, Ashok Dinda.
Umpires: Rudi Koertzen (South Africa), Ivor Chirombe (Zimbabwe). Match referee: Jeffrey Crowe (New Zealand).
