A man has been sentenced to 10 years in jail for possessing a quantity of cannabis which he allegedly intended to sell.
The 34-year-old Nigerian, a resident, was arrested on February 23 by the Naif police following a tip-off from a reliable source that he possessed a quantity of the narcotics for sale.
The police seized hashish, weighing about 5 grams, from him. The Court of First Instance ordered him to pay Dh50,000 fine and sentenced him to be deported afterwards. The drugs have been confiscated as per the court's order.
A police lieutenant said they learnt the accused was in Naif and with a search and arrest prosecution warrant they went after him. Drugs were found in his possession.
The Dubai Police Crime Lab's report found the defendant had consumed hashish and traces of narcotics found in his urine sample could not have been the result of any taking of medical pills.
The court's ruling remains subject to appeal.
