Two expats have gone on trial at a Dubai court accused of assaulting an on-duty police officer.
The Court of First Instance heard how the two Canadian women, including a 25-year-old business development manager and a 37-year-old design manager, would not pay heed to the instructions of the officer to produce their IDs but rather lay their hand on him, while pushing the cop.
They also used abusive language with him.
The incident happened on July 19 when the officer responded to a call made by a cabbie. The latter was complaining against the two women who failed to pay him after being dropped off at their flat. A case was filed at Bur Dubai police station.
Dubai public prosecution accused them of physically assaulting and verbally abusing an on-duty police officer and consuming liquor without a permit.
During prosecution investigation, the officer said that he was on patrol duty with a colleague when they received a report about a problem in City Walk. "A taxi driver told us later that he dropped off three women and a man to a building but they just stepped off his car without paying him."
As they would not come down even after being told that he is a police officer, he asked the security guard to take him to their flat.
The officer recounted to the prosecutor how the women would not give a reason for not paying the cabbie nor produce their IDs. They just verbally abused him, he said. "One of them said she would complain at her country's embassy while she kept talking inappropriately with her flatmate about me. That woman also said that I can't do anything to her," he told the investigator.
When he finally got an ID of one of the women, she yelled and tried to slip her hand in his pocket to take her ID back. "I stopped her. Both women did not respect me or my uniform. Each of them used her body and hands to push me back."
He also said that the women danced in a mocking way in front of him.
He called the lieutenant in charge at the police station and asked him to send a policewoman to apprehend the two women.
The next hearing will be held on December 10.
