Three workers were charged with forcible robbery at the Dubai Court of First Instance for allegedly stealing Dh 34,000 worth of smartphones and Dh12,000 in cash from an electronics shop in Al Muhaisnah.
The Pakistani men, aged between 23 and 42, broke locks using sharp tools and ransacked the shop, getting away with 30 smartphones in the wee hours of March 20, according to public prosecution records.
The Indian complainant, 32, said he closed the shop around half past midnight on the day. "At 9am, I found that the locks were broken," he said, adding that upon checking his goods, he discovered that 30 phones of different brands were missing, in addition to accessories, all of which were worth a total of Dh34,000. "An amount of Dh 12,000 was also stolen from the cash register. When the police caught the suspects and showed them to me, I identified some of the phones recovered from them as the items stolen from the shop," he told the prosecutor.
After further investigation into the robbery complaint, the police found that the first accused was involved, a lieutenant said. "We apprehended him around 10pm on April 24. He confessed that they had targeted the shop and planned to break into it at night."
The defendant admitted that he had robbed other shops with his accomplices in the same way. A large quantity of stolen phones was found in his room at a labour accommodation.
The court will issue a ruling on October 25.
