A 25-year-old unemployed Bangladeshi, who sexually harassed a woman and injured her, has been sentenced to six months in jail and deportation by the Court of First Instance.
The accused was convicted on Sunday of charges including sexual assault and trespassing into other’s property.
The woman, a 29-year-old Filipina waitress, told the police and the prosecution that the accused attacked her at about 4am on September 28 last year, as she entered the villa yard where she lived in Bur Dubai. “He was hiding in the yard and suddenly hugged and kissed me,” she said.
The man fled the scene as she started to scream for help. “I went to the hospital for treatment and later reported the incident to the police.”
On October 7, last year, the complainant was summoned to the Bur Dubai Police Station.
She identified the defendant among other suspects. “I saw his face that night because he was very close to me when he attacked me and the lighting was good.”
A police officer said the defendant was arrested in another case. “He was referred to us for interrogation after we found that he met the descriptions given to us by the Filipina complainant.”
The accused willingly admitted in investigation that he stalked the complainant and sexually harassed her, taking advantage of the fact that it was late and no one was around.
The forensic report showed that the complainant had a lip injury, as reported by her in her statements to the police.
The verdict is subject to appeal within 15 days.
