A 64-year-old man, who allegedly molested a woman in a store in a shopping centre, was charged in the Court of First Instance on Tuesday.
The businessman, a Sudanese national, denied the charge claiming it happened by mistake.
During the questioning, he said he only told her that he liked her, a police corporal said. "But when I reminded him about the surveillance cameras, he got scared and said he only touched her head and that he touched her backside by mistake.
The accused also claimed to the officer that he liked the woman as she was wearing a niqab and decent clothes and that she was like his daughter. The police arrested the accused at the store in Al Muraqqabat around 5pm on February 25.
"The woman told me that a man touched her head, shoulder and backside more than once while she was picking some items. She complained against him as she thought he did it intentionally," said the corporal.
However, what exactly happened in that particular spot in the store was not caught on camera.
The complainant said that the man approached her as she was near the seafood stand. "He played with my daughter and asked about my nationality. He then touched my head".
She told him that she was married when he said 'you are like my sister".
"'He got close to me and touched my backside with his foot. He asked me to read the kinds of fish claiming he had some sight problems. He then touched my head and backside again," she added.
The hearing has been adjourned to May 17. - mary@khaleejtimes.com
