77 salons fined in Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi - More than 102 warnings were issued and 155 cosmetic materials which fall short of specified standards were seized.

The Abu Dhabi City Municipality has issued fines on 77 salons and beauty parlours in Al Watba and other suburbs of the Capital for not complying with the rules on hygiene and sanitation conditions.
The civic body conducted the inspection campaign in last January, February and March, aiming at protecting customers from the use of fake substances, particularly cosmetics and other equipment, besides ensuring the physical fitness of salon employees.
During the inspection campaign, more than 102 warnings were issued and 155 cosmetic materials which fall short of specified standards were seized.
The civic body also confiscated scores of creams, fragrance sprays, hair-clips, expired and fake cosmetics, skin cleansers, hair dyes and other substances. The offences recorded in beauty parlours included using non-sterilised towels and poor public hygiene, among other malpractices. The campaigns carried out by inspectors last year targeted hundreds of beauty parlours and salons in the area.
The raids targeted three key categories, firstly: owners of beauty salons, who are responsible to apply health standards including cleanliness and sterilisation.
Secondly, customers of hairdressing salons are targeted to educate them about the health standards and provide them with leaflets and brochures.
Thirdly, the low-rated salons in terms of compliance with health standards.
The action taken by the municipality against violators included following up offending salons and reminding them to ensure their compliance with health requirements. In case of repeated violations, legal action would be taken depending on the type of the offence.
The municipality reminded all workers in hairdressing salons and beauty parlours in Abu Dhabi to follow the health standards.
