Awareness key to fighting eve-teasers

Dubai - Col Al Matroushi urged women to contact the nearest police sta­tion if they are harassed at shop­ping centres or public places.

In Sharjah and Ajman, authori­ties have repeatedly launched awareness campaigns to deter eve-teasing.
According to Colonel Abdullah Saif Al Matroushi, Director of the Criminal Investigation Depart­ment (CID), Ajman Police, the po­lice have deployed special patrols to curb the practice.
"Installing cameras at malls, on the streets and in parks has played a great role in minimising such anti-social elements," he said.
Over the past few years, the police have rounded up more than 100 eve-teasers from malls and other public areas after complaints. "We will not tolerate those who disre­spect women and put their safety and security at risk," he added.

No complaints for two years in Sharjah
A CID official in Sharjah said that during the last two years, they have not received any complaints from women against eve-teasers. The Sharjah Police have also formed a special team to curb eve-teasing.
"Police patrols have been de­ployed near shopping centres as well as in commercial and resi­dential areas to round up harass­ers," said the official. "The po­lice have educated the public about the public decency law and it has played a great role in en­suring safety and peace for all residents."
